Places of Tourist attractions

Places of Tourist Interests in Hubli & Dharwad

Hubli or now called “Hubballi” in this part of Karnataka State is called “Chota Bombay” for being the commercial hub and important centre of commercial activities. Dharwad which is 20Kms. away from here is the seat of learning but both the cities are clubbed together as twin city under Hubli-Dharwad City Corporation. Hubli is being seen as the tier-II IT destination in Karnataka State along with other cities like Mysore, Mangalore, and Belgaum. To substantiate this fact, we now have the Hubli IT Park established which is situated on the way towards Gokul.

Kittur Rani Channamma Circle: (Popularly known as Traffic Island) is located in the heart of Hubli city where eight roads meet. The newly renovated and remodeled famous Kittur Chennamma Circle is near the old bus stand of the city. Hubli- Dharwad Municipal Corporation has invested total amount of Rs 70 lakhs for the renovation of this circle. A lawn is created around the statue. Besides, 300 meters road around the circle is asphalted.

Idgah Maidan: Is located in the heart of the city besides the Kittur Channamma Circle. This place was the epicenter of communal discord a few years ego. The religious controversy over the “Idgah Maidan” was responsible for communal violence, and also for the death of many people in the police firing, but now, one can say that this has become a place for communal harmony over the passing of time. The place was leased for long time by the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation for the Muslim community members to conduct mass prayers (namaaz) during their festivals. An “Idgah” was constructed at a corner of this ground, hence began to be called “IdgahMaidan”. Some time before, when the Anjuman Islam Committee began to construct commercial complex at the disputed spot, trouble started with filing of public interest litigation in the High Court seeking directions for the Muslims to use the ground only for prayers and not to exploit commercially.

Indira Glass House: As the name suggests, this is a unique place made of glass. The flower show at the Glass House is a sight of delight. It is also a venue for conducting many exhibitions, meetings and programmes. This is very much similar to the one that is Lalbagh at Bangalore. It has expansive lush green lawns and skating ground. The glorious Glass House has the pride of being the venue for honoring various dignitaries who have visited the state. This glass house was inaugurated by the late prime minister Smt. Indira Gandhi. Laughing Club was inaugurated at this garden on 22-04-2000. Thousands of people are participating in laughing exercise, half an hour in the morning, enjoying good health and sound mind, free of cost.

Moorusaviramath: It was built during the 12th century consisting of “Samadhi” of Shri Gurusiddeshwar Swamy. In the 12th century, during the period of Kalyan Revolutionistic period, Sri Channabasavanna stepped over this place accompanied by 3,000 ( Three Thousand meaning Mooru Savira in Kannada language) saints and went to “Ulavi” asking the saints, to spread the universal Gospel. Thus the name originated as "Moorusavira Math”.

Siddharoodha Math: “Shri Siddaroodha Swamy” who born in 1836, visited Hubli in 1877 & visited “Samadhi Mandir” of Shri Chidgananand Swamy in 1882 and subsequently resided here. Chidganand Swamy“Samadhi” was built during the period between 1897 to1907. Siddaroodha Swamy went to “Samadhi” in 1929. In 1919, Lokamanya Gangadhar Tilak visited Siddaroodh Math and later in 1924 Mahatma Gandhiji visited. It is the eminent religious institution, a centre of “Advaita” philosophy as preached by Swami Siddharoodha, located at near outskirts of Hubli. It is a prominent religious institution, a centre of “Advaita” philosophy as preached by Swami Siddharoodha (1837-1929). The latter has a very large number of devotees amongst all communities, spread over Karnataka and also the neighboring states of Maharashtra and Goa.

Airport:Presently Kingfisher Airlines are operating Bangalore and Mumbai daily flights from here. The process of acquiring additional land for expansion of the Hubli airport to an international facility will take some time after a notification for the same is issued by the Karnataka Government Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) which will be the nodal agency for land acquisition. Work on upgrading the airport will start only after the land is handed over to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and hence, cannot be expected to be ready before 2010. During a preliminary survey of the area identified in the AAI master plan for the expansion project, district revenue officials found that a total of 155 houses will have to be demolished in colonies in the vicinity of the existing airport. This project has been on the papers for quite a long time now. The proposed expansion requires 712 acres of land as per the master plan of Airports Authority of India (AAI). As of today, the land acquisition process is being finalized.
Location of the Air Port:
Latitude: 15o 21' N Longitude: 75o 05' E, Height: above Mean Sea Level- 2162 ft

STPI (Software Technology parks of India): The Multi-storied Hubli IT park, spread over an area of2,77,000 Sq.ft.has been operational from May 2001. It is located in the IT Park - situated in the heart of the city. STPI Hubli is sub center of STPI Bangalore. STPI Hubli has a high speed gateway with a capacity of 1 Mbps, capable of servicing the internet community in the radius of 40 Kms. With its high-tech microwave setup, the capacity can go up to Davanagere, Shimoga and up to Gulbarga and Belgaum in the northern region using hired fiber /copper. STPI Hubli is the fourth independent software gateway in Karnataka State. (Bangalore being the main center, accounts for country's one third of software exports.)

Unakal Lake: A pictorial and beautiful water spot with a magnificent sunset view, with a perfect picnic spot has lush green garden, recreational facilities for children and boating facilities. The lake is about 3 Kms. away from Hubli city. Here you experience the cool breeze blowing in the dusk, where people of all ages relax forgetting their worries. You can also enjoy a boat ride here. The lake, however, is large enough to accommodate all visitors as well as the hawkers. It is about 110 years old. Unakal is known to be “Karma Bhoomi” of “Shri Siddappajja”, who was born in the year 1859 and left home when he was 14 years old in search of a Guru. He resided in Unkal Mailarlinga Temple and died on 31-01-1921. Since then “Jatra” (mela) is held every year. Unakal Lake earlier was a major source of drinking water for Hubli. Watching the sunset and sunrise from the lake is an enthralling experience. In the evenings, the lake is virtually a fair ground with various kinds of entertainment and food stalls lining the lake. At the centre of the lake is situated the statue of “Swami Vivekananda” which is a prime attraction of the lake. Hotel Naveen, the star attraction of Hubli city is just besides this spot.

Chandramouleshwara Temple: is at Unakal, Hubballi, is a temple, of the Chalukyan Architecture. The style that developed in this temple is of the Chalukyan style. Certainly the Chalukyans, not solely because of their faith in religion but they wanted to over awe their enemies and subjects with an enormous show of wealth and power, built these temples. Or perhaps they wanted to impress their subjects with a show of love for the architecture. Or perhaps they wanted to atone for the sins they had committed by killing innumerable innocent people in the bloody wars they fought, no one knows for sure. The temples were built by teams of architects, artists, sculptors and masons, who remain anonymous. Images of dancing lord Ganesha, 'jaalandhra' at Chandramouleshwara Temple are really beautiful. Exactly opposite, is located the very beautiful Nrupatunga hill. Chandramouleshwara Temple is very near to Unakal circle and Unakal Lake (on Old NH-4 between Hubli and Dharwad) God Chandramouleshwara (another name of Shiva) temple is in a sheer state of neglect and the department of architecture’s efforts are required to restore the temple’s past glory.

Nrupatunga Hill: An ideal place to get away from the heat and dust, the crowds and traffic jams of the city. A favorite picnic spot for residents of Hubli-Dharwad. It is a beautiful scenic place situated at an altitude of ft. It is the highest hill station in the twin cities. Atop the hill is the Devi temple. This is a beautiful hilly picnic spot in Hubli. 12. Good one. Hubli is a major city in the state of Karnataka in Southern India. The literal meaning of the name of the city is quite peculiar, as it means a flowering creeper. It is famous for crops like peanuts and cotton. Check out more about Hubli tourism.
